Wizards of the Coast Addresses Leaked Cards During Lorwyn Eclipsed Prerelease MTG

Table of Contents

Cracking a Prerelease Pack and seeing a promo that clearly is not from the set is the kind of jump-scare nobody asked for.

TLDR

  • Some Lorwyn Eclipsed Prerelease Packs reportedly contained foil promo cards from the wrong (unreleased) set.
  • Wizards of the Coast acknowledged the issue on social media late on January 16, 2026, and said it was unintentional.
  • Stores should swap in the correct ECL promo if possible. If not, players can play with the incorrect card, and stores should contact their WPN representative.

What happened at Lorwyn Eclipsed Prerelease

Prerelease weekend for Lorwyn Eclipsed began on January 16, 2026, and it also kicked off a small change that matters here: the Prerelease Pack’s included foil promo is no longer year-stamped.

Then came the weird part. A number of players reported opening their kits and finding the “promo slot” wasn’t a Lorwyn Eclipsed card at all, but a rare from an entirely different product. The reports spread quickly online, but we’re not posting leaks or naming the other set here. If you are trying to keep your spoiler diet clean, this is a good weekend to be a little careful on social feeds.

Wizards’ response (and what they told stores to do)

Wizards addressed the situation on its official social account around 9:22 PM Eastern on January 16.

The guidance was straightforward:

  • If a store can, it should replace the incorrect promo with the appropriate Lorwyn Eclipsed promo from other Prerelease kits.
  • If there aren’t enough promos to go around, players can still participate using the incorrect card.
  • Stores are encouraged to talk with their WPN representative for next steps.

Not glamorous, but it’s the fastest “keep the event moving” solution.

What you should do if it happens to you

If you open a kit and the promo looks… suspiciously not-Lorwyn:

  • Call a judge or the tournament organizer immediately. Don’t try to solve it mid-round.
  • Ask if they can swap promos from another kit (this is what Wizards recommends when possible).
  • If they cannot, play on with what you opened. It’s awkward, but at least you still get to actually play Magic.

Does this matter for Commander?

Mechanically, not much, because Prerelease is Limited. For Commander players, the real impact is social and psychological: leaks travel fast, and once they’re out, they’re hard to unsee.

If you want the Commander angle anyway, it’s this: your pod should not suddenly “expect” cards from an unreleased set, even if someone opened one early. Keep your Rule 0 brain turned on.

Wrap up

Most players will open normal Prerelease Packs and have a perfectly normal weekend. If you hit the mispacked promo, the play is simple: tell the organizer, swap if possible, and if not, shuffle up and carry on.
